MSU Programs Score High Marks in NCAA Academic Progress Rate
MOREHEAD, Ky.—Morehead State University had five teams place in the top half of Division I in their respective sports in the NCAA’s Multi-Year Academic Progress Rate and had eight teams score a perfect 1000 in the 2008-09 APR, the most recent year tabulated by the NCAA.
Morehead State and Eastern Illinois led the Ohio Valley Conference with eight teams each receiving a perfect APR for 2008-09 academic year. No Morehead State teams were penalized for their multi-year APR.
“Our teams’ commitment to excellence starts in the classroom and continues onto the field,” said MSU Director of Athletics Brian Hutchinson. “We strive to bring in recruits who not only are exemplary student-athletes, but also are a good fit for Morehead State o that they are in good academic standing throughout their career and remain on track to graduate.”
Two MSU teams, soccer and rifle, earned public recognition awards in May for their success in the APR. Rifle had a perfect 1000 for the four-year period from 2005-2009 and soccer had a 997. Both teams were in the top 10 percentile of their respective sports.
Men’s cross country, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, rifle, soccer and baseball were all in the top half of their respective sports in their multi-year APR scores.
Rifle, men’s and women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, men’s cross country, women’s basketball, women’s tennis and volleyball all had a perfect 1000 APR in the 2008-09 data.
The NCAA uses the APR, which is compiled across multiple years, to determine academic success among its Division I membership. Teams earning public recognition post APRs in the top 10 percent of all teams nationally in the multi-year APR.
The APR provides a real-time look at a team's academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team's academic performance.
