MSU receives underage drinking grant

June 8, 2010 —     Morehead State University will receive nearly $40,000 from a federal grant fund to help fight underage drinking. The Enforcing Underage Drinking Laws (EUDL) money will provide law enforcement training, educational programing and alcohol alternative events for students, according to the Kentucky State police, who presented the check to Michelle Webb who is the Substance Abuse Treatment Counselor at MSU.

Webb serves as the project coordinator for this grant.

“We are very excited to be receiving this grant,” Webb said. “The funds will be used to further our educational and prevention activities in an effort to reduce underage drinking on our campus.”

MSU will receive $38,755 from the EUDL grant which is provided by the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention.

The KSP is serving as the designated state administrator for grant program. KSP Capt. John Blanton presented the check in a ceremony held on campus Tuesday that was attended by local law enforcement agencies, local officials and Rowan County Champions members.

“The KSP Morehead Post is proud to partner in this important campus project to curb underage drinking at the collegiate level,” Blanton said. “We believe that strong community involvement combined with enforcement efforts will contribute to the successful implementation of this program.”

MSU was a part of seven other agencies receiving a total of $354,000 in federal grant funds to enforce underage drinking laws that prohibit the sale, purchase and consumption of alcoholic beverages by minors.
