Rowan County Jr. Miss finishes in Top 5!
Kelly Modaff, Rowan County Junior Miss 2010, definitely showed grace under pressure when she participated in this year’s Kentucky’s Junior Miss. That grace must have helped because Kelly was named as the 2nd runner-up in the state scholarship program and she also received a Preliminary Talent Award for her piano performance.
Kelly, the daughter of Lois Starkey and John Modaff and a senior at Rowan County Senior High School, spent the week of January 10-16 in Lexington with 33 other girls preparing for the Kentucky’s Junior Miss scholarship program. The young women who compete in the Junior Miss program are judged in five areas: scholastics, interview, talent, fitness, and self-expression or poise. During the week Kelly and her fellow contestants practiced their fitness routines,
polished their talent performances, and prepared for their interviews. On Friday, January 15th and Saturday, January 16th Kelly and the 33 other Junior Miss contestants moved from preparation to competition as they took to the stage at the University of Kentucky’s Singletary Center.
At the end of the Preliminary Round, Kelly received a Preliminary Talent Award for her performance of Chopin’s “The Revolutionary Etude #12.” Her fans in the audience were on the edge of their seats as they watched her move from the Top 15, to the Top 10, and then to the Top 5 contestants. When they heard her answer to the final question of the evening, which dealt with the use of locally grown agriculture products, they knew that Kelly would fare well.
“She was so at ease during that final interview,” said Lucy Moore. “I know that her finish as the 2nd runner-up was directly due to her exceptional talent, her great interviews and her fitness skills. She represented the school system and Rowan County with distinction and I know that the Morehead Women’s Club, which sponsors the Rowan County Junior Miss program, is extremely proud of Kelly.”
Kelly was also able to realize the importance of participating in a program that is dedicated to fostering education through providing scholarships to talented high school senior girls. Not only did she earn the title of 2nd runner-up and a Preliminary Talent Award, she was also able to reap the rewards by coming away with almost $4000 in college scholarships from the Kentucky’s Junior Miss scholarship program.
When asked about her participation in the Junior Miss programs, Kelly Modaff said, “Both the Rowan County Junior Miss and the Kentucky Junior Miss scholarship programs completely exceeded all my expectations. Meeting all the other girls and getting to know them was the best part. The Junior Miss program has also helped me prepare and polish my interview skills. I definitely would recommend it to anyone who is interested.”
Congratulations, Kelly Modaff!
